Course Objective:
To provide participants with an understanding on Asthma and Common allergic Condition in Children, covering 3 main topics in (1) Understanding The Challenges of Children With Bronchial Asthma; (2) Allergic Diseases in Children and (3) Exercise and the Asthmatic Child.

The trainers will also share some insights on how to optimize the active lifestyle for these children. At the end of the course, there will be a practical session on Asthma Inhalation Techniques for participants.

Course Outline:
Topic (I): Understanding The Challenges of Children With Bronchial Asthma
Participant will learn:
  • The condition of Bronchial Asthma;
  • Different factors affecting Bronchial Asthma; &
  • How to overcome the challenges faced by the children.
Topic (II): Allergic Diseases In Children
Participant will learn:
  • Allergic diseases such as eczema, allergic rhinitis, asthma, etc.;
  • What to look out for with children having allergic diseases; &
  • How to allow children with allergic diseases to take part in sports activities without aggravating his/her allergic symptoms.
Topic (III): Exercise And Asthmatic Child
Participant will learn:
  • How to exercise with a better understanding of Exercise Induced Asthma (EIA); &
  • Guidelines for safe exercises, choice of activities and when to avoid certain activities.
Topic (IV): Written Asthma Action Plan (WAAP)
Participant will be equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills on the use of WAAP.

Profile of Trainers:
(1) Dr Jenny Tang is the Deputy Head with the Department of Paediatric Medicine; Head & Senior Consultant, Respiratory Medicine Service and Director, Sleep Disorders Centre with the KK Women's and Children's Hospital.

She is also a Senior Clinical Lecturer with the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University Hospital and the Programme Director, Basic and Advanced Specialty Trainees Paediatrics KKH, Ministry of Health, Singapore.

(2) Dr Teoh Oon Hoe is currently a Consultant with the Respiratory Medicine Service at the KK Women's and Children's Hospital.

His involvements include HMDP training with the Children's Hospital Institute of Sports Medicine in cardiopulmonary exercise testing and the Children's Hospital at Westmead in respiratory medicine, sleep medicine and flexible bronchoscopy.

(3) Dr Anne Goh is currently a Senior Consultant of the Respiratory Medicine Service and Head of the Paediatric Allergy, Immunology and Rheumatology Service at the Department of Paediatrics, KK Women's & Children's Hospital, Singapore.

With clinical and research interests in the areas including respiratory infections, bronchial asthma management, obstructive sleep apnoea and allergy, Dr Goh has authored or co-authored several peer-reviewed papers as well as given many presentations at national and international courses and conferences. She is also actively involved in many asthma-related and allergy clinical trials.

(4) Nurse Clinician Zaliha Binte Mohd Yatim is a Asthma Resource Nurse, Respiratory Medicine Service Department at the KK Women's and Children's Hospital (KKH). She is a member of Singapore National Asthma Programme (SNAP) in KKH since 2001.

She works with the relevant Department of Medicine Services and other relevant departments in the development, implementation and monitoring of the National Shared Care Programme for High-Risk Asthma/Asthma Care Path for patients with asthma.
