Mental Well-Being for Sporting Excellence

Course Objective:
To provide participants with an overview of stress and how stress can affect our mental well-being and sports performance. Through interactive activities, participants will learn how to identify, learn how to manage stress and enhance sports performance among others.

Course Outline:
Participant will learn:
  • Definitions of well-being / stress according to biopsycho-social model and the relationship between stress and well-being;
  • How stress affects well-being;
  • Casual factors of stress;
  • Signs & symptoms of stress;
  • Stress across developmental span (children and adolescent);
  • Ways of managing stress effectively (hands on activity);
  • Stress in sports performance;
  • Prevention of stress;
  • Building "mentally strong" athletes; &
  • Stress management techniques for children and adolescents.
Profile of Trainer:
(1) Ms. Makespary Karunanidi, Psychologist Psychology Service, KKH
Ms. Makespary Karunanidi has over 18 years of experience as a counselor and psychologist. She has worked with chemical dependants (drug & alcohol), juvenile delinquents, orphans, single mothers, battered wives and students (learning institution). Ms. Makespray received her Master and Bachelor degree in Clinical Psychology from the National University of Malaysia.

Currently, Ms. Makespray works as a psychologist with Psychology Service where she provides psychological support for individuals with learning difficulties, mal-adaptive behaviours and emotional setbacks - all of which aim to assist clients to enhance their personal well-being.

(2) Ms. Lim Xin Yi, Psychologist Psychology Service, KKH

Ms. Xin Yi is a psychologist working at the Psychology Service, she has much experience working with children, adolescents and families on emotional, behavioural and psychological concerns. Her interest includes understanding the fundamentals of well-being and how to cope with perceived stress. A secondary area of interest is in anxiety and depression.

Ms. Xin Yi is an avid dancer and taps on dancing activities to help her "de-stress". She graduated with a Master degree in Psychology from the University of Edinburgh and had been based in Singapore upon her graduation.
