Synopsis
Youth participation in sport has the potential to accomplish three important objectives in children's development: improving health benefits, personal development, and athletic performance. Because these objectives are so different, youth sport activities are often structured to meet only one objective independently of the other two. However, by structuring youth sport activities and programs through the use of common building blocks that meet the needs of all young people, we can achieve all three objectives and reap the benefits associated with youth sport participation. This talk will focus on a series of studies that have examined the optimal developmental activities and environmental conditions that lead to continued health, personal development, and athletic performance for youth in sport.

Synopsis
It is important to consider coaches as one of the most important assets of an overall sporting system. If coaches are consistently able to improve children's competence, confidence, connection, and character through sport, they are making an enormous impact on the development of sport and society. In order to improve coaching education programs and provide athletes and sport participants with optimal sport environments, sport researchers must endeavor to empirically answer two questions: What is coaching expertise, and how is coaching expertise developed? Based on the extensive literature on coaching and athletes' development, this presentation will offer a definition of coaching expertise and present studies that trace the development of selected coaches

Synopsis
This presentation focuses on the potential of youth sport programs to foster positive development, while decreasing the risk of problem behaviours in children and adolescents. Youth sport programs can assure positive outcomes through developmentally appropriate designs and supportive child-adult (parent/coach) relationships. Sport programs should be built on appropriate developmental assets and environmental features that are known to produce positive growth. This presentation uses an ecological framework to highlight the important roles of policy makers, sport organizations, coaches, and parents, in fostering positive youth development in sport.
