The Singapore Sports Council (SSC) has made great strides in the past five years in transforming the way Singaporeans view and participate in sports. By any measure -- commitment, time, financial investment or results -- sports have become a way of life in 21st century Singapore.
Through sports, we now have an important source of national identity thanks to wide-ranging participation programmes; of national pride as a result of high performance results at international and regional games; and of economic growth through vibrant sports industry initiatives.
For the first time in our country's 40-year plus history, Singapore has a true sports ecology -- a fully integrated system to realise our immediate needs as well as our long-term sports ambitions. Indeed, the SSC already has achieved many of the goals set down by the government's Committee on Sporting Singapore in 2001.
However, there's more to come. Our comprehensive sports programmes and marketing strategies are designed to place Singapore at the centre for sports in Asia. The upcoming Sports Hub along with a new Sports Institute will generate further momentum for our athlete and coaching development programmes. Sports Industry will grow on the back of new sponsorship in events and capital investment in sports-related businesses.
The SSC's strategy has been carefully built on three equally important thrusts. Our sports participation team in SSC develops sports outreach programmes for all Singaporeans through lifestyle marketing, collaborative partnerships with the private sector & other government agencies and steadily improving access to the best facilities and sports opportunities in Asia. We already are among the most inclusive sports nations in the world today, and public access to sports facilities, services and opportunities gets better every year. The sports excellence team promotes international sporting excellence in targeted sports. We take an athlete-focused, coach-driven approach, while maximising our use of sports science to increase our competitive edge. Our ongoing education and accreditation programmes will strengthen the capabilities of our technical officials and our high performance coaches. (Read more about Excellence)
The sports industry team is working on building a sustainable sports industry to maintain our contribution to the greater economy and to help finance our programmes into the next decade and beyond. The future holds great promise due to a strong calendar of major events, growth in sponsorship and television rights, the creation of new businesses and the anticipation of international federations in Singapore.
