  • Amalgamation of the National Sports Promotion Board and the National Stadium Corporation, to form the Singapore Sports Council. (1st October 1973)
  • Dr B K Sen was appointed SSC's first chairman
  • Adoption of the Sport-for-All policy
  • Establishment of SSC Sports Medicine and Research Centre
  • Establishment of SSC Sport Library
  • Organisation of the first National Walk
1975
  • Dr Tan Eng Liang, Senior Minister of State for National Development, became SSC Chairman
  • Inauguration of the Esso Sports Scholar Award
1976
  • Implementation of the Master Plan of Sports Facilities (Phase I)
  • Establishment of Constituency Sports Clubs
  • Implementation of National Aerobic Fitness Award Scheme (NAFA)
  • Implementation of the Coaching Plan
1977
  • Opening of the first fitness park at MacRitchie Reservoir

  • Opening of the Singapore Indoor Stadium

  • The Advisory Council on Sports & Recreation (ACSR) established to review the sports and recreation situation in Singapore
1991 to 1993
  • Joint Polytechnic-SSC Admission Scheme for Sports Persons
  • Ng Ser Miang took over the helm as SSC Chairman in 1992
  • Launch of the National Healthy Lifestyle Campaign
  • Implementation of Sports Excellence Assistance Programme for Schools (SEAPS) in 1993
  • Implementation of SPEX (or Sports Excellence 21) 2000
  • Launch of first Great Singapore Workout
  • Staging of the XVII SEA Games
1994
  • Restructuring of SSC to meet new challenges and adopting a new corporate identity
  • Revamp of SSC's Sports Scholarship Scheme
  • Great Singapore Workout made it to the Guinness Book of Records for the largest mass aerobics held at one location (Padang 26,013)
1996
  • Launch of the new thrust for Sports-for-All, known as Sports for Life. This was in conjunction with the implementation of the Regional Sports and Fitness Centre Concept (RSFC)
  • Inauguration of the Sport for Life Walk test with NAFA and tests renamed as Sport for Life Run
  • Opening of the first Regional Sports and Fitness Centre (RSFC) at Clementi
1997
  • Launch of ClubFitt 1998
  • Launch of the Sports for Life Employee Fitness Programme
  • SSC organised the 1st World Walking Day
2000
  • SPEX 21 was implemented to set out strategic plans and directions for high performance athletes and sports in Singapore with the aim to raise the overall standards of sports and the competitive spirit of Singaporeans
2001
  • The Committee on Sporting Singapore(CoSS), comprising major stake holders including the SSC, is formed. It presented 40 recommendations under the Sporting Singapore vision to include a sporting culture through the three pillars of Sports for Life, Sports Excellence and Sports Industry. Government endorsed all recommendations.
  • Team Singapore, the united identity of elite athletes, coaches and officials from Singapore that represents the country in major multi-sport Games and identified international competitions, is mooted by the Ministry of Community Development and Sports.
2002
  • Inaugural launch of Coach Recognition Awards
2003
  • The SSC launched the Coaching Scholarship and Bursary Awards
2005
  • Olympian swimmer and Rhodes Scholar, Thum Ping Tjin, became the first Singaporean ever to have successfully swum across the English Channel.
  • Singapore hosted the 117th IOC Session from 6-9 July 2005. A gathering of 5,000 IOC members, sports officials, and international media, bid cities as well as royalty and prime ministers
  • Team Singapore achieved 55 Bronze, 32 Silver and 42 Gold in 2005 SEA Games in Manila
2006
  • Historical best performance of 23 medals in total for Team Singapore in Doha Asian Games 2006
2007
  • A 12-member Sports Safety Committee was formed in July 2007 to come up with recommendations to promote and enhance sports safety in Singapore
  • The SSC launched Singapore's first sports scholarship in an effort to enhance manpower capabilities as Singapore prepares for an exciting growth phase in the sports industry
  • Singapore became the first Asian country to play host to Ironman 70.3, a renowned world-class high endurance race
  • Team Singapore had its best ever away performance at the 24th South East Asian Games in Korat, Thailand with a medal-haul of 43 golds, 43 silvers, and 21 bronzes
  • Peter Gilchrist made the headlines when he broke the 15-year old World Record with his 1,346 score for billiards at the New Zealand Open Billiards Championships.
  • The Lions successfully defended their ASEAN Football Championship title for the second time
  • The formation of the National Water Safety Council (NWSC) tasked to oversee our water safety initiatives and prevention efforts
  • After 34 years of serving the nation, the National Stadium, the Grand Old Dame of Kallang, officially closed her doors. To celebrate the life of the National Stadium, SSC together with its partners rolled out a series of commemorative events, culminating in the final send-off called "Field of Dreams - A Tribute to the National Stadium".
2008
  • The Sporting Culture Committee (SCC) released its report, detailing 23 recommendations to catalyse the growth of an inclusive sporting community, groom our own sporting heroes to bring home international glory, and develop a dynamic sports industry that generates economic opportunities.
  • Launch of the Let's Play movement aimed at encouraging everyone in Singapore to embrace sports as a lifestyle choice. It seeks to connect, energise and enrich everyone from all walks of life through the many aspects of sports.
  • Launch of a new online portal for sports: www.singaporesports.sg. It provides easy access to information on where to play sports, where to watch them, how to play them and who to play with.
  • Start of the inaugural FORMULA 1 SingTel Singapore Grand Prix, the first night race in the history of FORMULA ONE.
  • First Olympic medal for Singapore in 48 years as our ladies table tennis team won a silver medal at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.
  • At the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games, equestrienne Laurentia Tan became the first Asian to win a medal at the Games with 2 bronze medals while Swimmer Yip Pin Xiu won our first gold medal at the women's 50m backstroke.
2009
  • Formation of the Framework for Alternative Dispute Resolution for Sports (ADR Sports) to resolve disputes faced by NSAs by leveraging on existing arbitral and mediation institutes rules, systems, expertise and reputation in resolving disputes
  • The inaugural POSB Everyday Champions Award recognised 57 individuals and organisations who motivate and inspire others to play and grow through sports
  • Over 5000 cyclists took part in the inaugural OCBC Cycle Singapore
  • The 1st Asian Youth Games Singapore 2009 was organised by the SSC and the Ministry of Education in a record-breaking eight months
  • Opening of SSC fourth generation sports facility and the first collaboration between SSC and the People's Association, Sengkang Sports and Recreation Centre. The facility also received the highly coveted "Universal Design Award for the Built Environment" from the Building and Construction Authority in recognition of its ability in combining the best of universal design principles with a respect for the surrounding natural environment.
