1973
  • Amalgamation of the National Sports Promotion Board and the National Stadium Corporation, to form the Singapore Sports Council. (1st October 1973)
  • Dr B K Sen was appointed SSC's first chairman
  • Adoption of the Sport-for-All policy
  • Establishment of SSC Sports Medicine and Research Centre
  • Establishment of SSC Sport Library
  • Organisation of the first National Walk

1975
  • Dr Tan Eng Liang, Senior Minister of State for National Development, became SSC Chairman
  • Inauguration of the Esso Sports Scholar Award

1976
  • Implementation of the Master Plan of Sports Facilities (Phase I)
  • Establishment of Constituency Sports Clubs
  • Implementation of National Aerobic Fitness Award Scheme (NAFA)

1977
  • Opening of the first fitness park at MacRitchie Reservoir

  • Opening of the Singapore Indoor Stadium

1991 to 1993
  • Joint Polytechnic-SSC Admission Scheme for Sports Persons
  • Ng Ser Miang took over the helm as SSC Chairman in 1992
  • Launch of the National Healthy Lifestyle Campaign
  • Implementation of Sports Excellence Assistance Programme for Schools (SEAPS) in 1993
  • Implementation of SPEX (or Sports Excellence 21) 2000
  • Launch of first Great Singapore Workout
  • Staging of the XVII SEA Games

1994
  • Restructuring of SSC to meet new challenges and adopting a new corporate identity
  • Revamp of SSC's Sports Scholarship Scheme
  • Great Singapore Workout made it to the Guinness Book of Records for the largest mass aerobics held at one location (Padang 26,013)

1996
  • Launch of the new thrust for Sports-for-All, known as Sports for Life. This was in conjunction with the implementation of the Regional Sports and Fitness Centre Concept (RSFC)
  • Inauguration of the Sport for Life Walk test with NAFA and tests renamed as Sport for Life Run
  • Opening of the first Regional Sports and Fitness Centre (RSFC) at Clementi

1997
  • Launch of ClubFitt 1998
  • Launch of the Sports for Life Employee Fitness Programme
  • SSC organised the 1st World Walking Day

2000
  • SPEX 21 was implemented to set out strategic plans and directions for high performance athletes and sports in Singapore with the aim to raise the overall standards of sports and the competitive spirit of Singaporeans

2001
  • The Committee on Sporting Singapore(CoSS), comprising major stake holders including the SSC, is formed. It presented 40 recommendations under the Sporting Singapore vision to include a sporting culture through the three pillars of Sports for Life, Sports Excellence and Sports Industry. Government endorsed all recommendations.
  • Team Singapore is mooted by the Ministry of Community Development and Sports. It is an approach to make sports, a winner in Singapore. While Sporting Singapore is the vision, Team Singapore is the way to get there

2002
  • Inaugural launch of Coach Recognition Awards.

2003
  • The SSC launched the Coaching Scholarship and Bursary Awards.

2005
  • Olympian swimmer and Rhodes Scholar, Thum Ping Tjin, added another feather to his cap when he became the first Singaporean ever to have successfully swum across the English Channel
  • Singapore hosted the 117th IOC Session from 6-9 July 2005. The session was a historic first for Sporting Singapore with a gathering of 5,000 IOC members, sports officials, and international media, bid cities as well as royalty and prime ministers
  • Team Singapore achieved 55 Bronze, 32 Silver and 42 Gold in 2005 SEA Games in Manila.

2006
  • Historical best performance in Doha Asian Games 2006. 23 medals in total.·
  • Sports Hub pre-qualification of 3 world-class consortiums.

2007
  • A 12-member Sports Safety Committee was formed in July 2007 to come up with recommendations to promote and enhance sports safety in Singapore.
  • The SSC launched Singapore's first sports scholarship in an effort to enhance manpower capabilities, as Singapore prepares for an exciting growth phase in the sports industry.
  • The Ironman 70.3 World Championship is a renowned world-class high endurance event held in various locations across the world. Singapore is honoured to be the first and only Asian country to play host to one of the qualifying rounds in 2007.
  • The sixth edition of the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon witnessed history in the making once again as it attracted a record number of 40,000 sign-ups, a 30% increase from 2006. The event also took on a stronger international flavour, with the highest ever number of 2,600 foreign runners from 52 countries.
  • The Final Clarification Stage (FCS) for the Singapore Sports Hub project came to a successful close in October 2007, with the SSC receiving three world-class submissions from three best-in-breed consortiums.
  • Team Singapore had a spectacular showing at the 24th South East Asian Games in Korat, Thailand. Singapore's medal-haul of 43 golds, 43 silvers, and 21 bronzes is its best ever away performance at the SEA Games.
  • Peter Gilchrist made the headlines when he broke the 15-year old World Record with his 1,346 score for billiards at the New Zealand Open Billiards Championships.
  • Our sailors and shooter also made local sporting history when they qualified for the 2008 Olympics on merit in the Men's 470 and Trap Shooting events.
  • The Lions successfully defended their ASEAN Football Championship title for the second time.
  • Singapore has been short-listed to host the inaugural YOG in 2010, along with Athens, Bangkok, Moscow and Turin.
  • Project 0812 is a new initiative that aims to boost our athletes Olympic campaigns in 2008 and 2012 so that they can achieve glory. It is a tripartite effort involving the Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC), MCYS and SSC.
  • The National Water Safety Council (NWSC) was formed in April 2007 as part of the Water Safety Taskforce's recommendations. The primary task of the NWSC is to oversee our water safety initiatives and prevention efforts.
