The contribution of sports medicine and science towards developing athletes to their maximum potential and to prolong their competitive sporting career is significant.
An integral unit of the Singapore Sports Council (SSC), the Sports Medicine and Sports Science (SMSS) division has stayed committed to their mission of optimising athletes' sporting performance and capabilities through education and research since 1973.
The SMSS division makes available to athletes its various disciplines including sports medicine, sports physiotherapy, and the sports sciences (sport biomechanics, sport nutrition, sport physiology, sport psychology, and strength and conditioning).
The SMSS division undertakes the:
- Prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of sports injuries
- Performance enhancement of athletes through the use of sports science
- Basic and applied research in sports medicine and sports science, and
- Dissemination of sports medicine and sports science information
To ensure the best delivery of sports medicine and science services to the athletes, the SMSS division adopts a holistic and integrated approach in assisting these athletes, coordinated and executed through its High Performance unit, that also spearheads initiatives such as cross-functional teams to help coaches and athletes address training issues where appropriate.
