Sport Psychology is the scientific study of behavioural and mental processes in the context of sport. The first ever Sport Psychology experiment to be recorded was done by Norman Triplett in 1898. He discovered the effect of social facilitation when cyclists would pedal faster in the presence of other cyclists as compared to cycling alone.
However, it was not until the 1920s that the field of Sport Psychology was officially established. In 1989, Sport Psychology was officially recognised as a branch of psychology.
The two goals of Sport Psychology are firstly, how psychological causes influence a person's physical performance and secondly, to understand how taking part in sports can affect a person's psychological development, health and overall well-being.
