Emily Ortega Senior Sports Psychologist Emily is currently working with the national athletes from swimming,badminton, and sailing. Prior to joining SSI on a full-time basis, Emily has worked with the national athletes from silat, bowling, and sailing. Emily was also a Sport Psychologist at the Singapore Sports School and worked with elite developmental youth athletes from sports such as track and field, sailing, table tennis, and netball.
Apart from her practical experience working with elite athletes, Emily also has extensive teaching experience, having taught in diploma to degree level Psychology programmes. She currently teaches the Mental Skills Training module for the National Coaching Accreditation Programme (NCAP).
Emily has strong interests in the use of biofeedback in Sport Psychology and has integrated biofeedback to assist athletes in improving their skills across a variety of situations such as rugby conversion kicks, relaxation, stress management, and pacing of swims.
Emily graduated with a degree in Psychology from the National University of Singapore, and completed her Masters in Sport Psychology at The University of Western Australia. Upon completion of her Masters, Emily went on to do an exclusive 3-week internship at the Australian Institute of Sports in Canberra.
Tay Hwei Chin Sports Psychologist Hwei Chin is currently working with the national athletes from badminton, bowling, and swimming. She is an applied psychologist by training and has extensive experience in the various aspects of high performance. Since 2003, Hwei Chin has been involved in national-level athlete development initiatives, high performance management, programme design and implementation as well as major games preparations. She firmly believes in the holistic development of athletes within and beyond the sporting arena.
Hwei Chin graduated with a degree in Psychology from the National University of Singapore, and completed her Masters in Applied Psychology with the University of Southern Queensland.
Zhao Jin Hong Sports Psychologist Zhao Jin Hong has been with SSI psychology team since 1998. She has worked with national athletes from Table-Tennis, Shooting, Badminton, Basketball, Wushu, and Archery. Jin Hong worked closely with team Singapore Table-tennis and shooting at Olympic Games (2000, 2004 &2008), Asian Games (1998, 2006 &2010) Commonwealth and SEA Games. Currently she is working with Fencing and Track & Field.
Prior to joining SSI, she worked as a sports psychologist in National Research Institute of Sport Science in China. She worked closely with Olympic athletes from Badminton, Table-Tennis, Basketball, Diving and Swimming. She was a member of psychology society of China.
Jin Hong graduated with a degree in Psychology from Beijing Normal University and is completing her Master degree in Applied Sports Psychology.
Jin Hong has strong interests in integrated sports psychological skills into coaching and training programme to assist athletes improving their mental toughness and performance consistence.
Azrulnizam Shah Assistant Sports Psychologist Azrul is currently working with national athletes in sailing and football as well as developmental athletes from bowling and badminton. Prior to his current work at SSI, Azrul was an active AFC-certified football coach at grassroots and school levels. He also ran mental skills workshops at local primary schools and junior colleges. His area of interest lies in the field of positive psychology, and he is currently completing a study in strengths-based interventions at the University of Western Australia (UWA), as part of fulfilment for his Masters of Science (Sports Psychology) with the institution.
Azrul's area of interest lies in developing interventions that are focused on helping athletes develop their personal strengths as well as sustain their sense of fulfilment in the sport. He also has an interest in the creation of positive team performance climates.
Azrul graduated from the Australian College of Applied Psychology with a degree in Applied Social Sciences (Sports & Performance specialisation), and has a Graduate Diploma in Science from the UWA. He is also a member of the International Positive Psychology Association, and has contributed to the International Journal of Positive Psychology.
Meichi Chen Sport Counsellor Meichi is currently working with national athletes from table tennis and gymnastics. Prior to her current work in SSI, Meichi has provided mental skill training services to national athletes from archery in Taiwan and student-athletes from Taekwondo, Track & Field, and archery in National Taiwan Sport University. Apart from her practical experience in sport psychology, Meichi developed her knowledge in human behaviour and helping skills by pursuing her Master?s degree in counselling psychology. Combining educational-orientated approach in sport psychology and humanistic-orientated approach in counselling psychology, Meichi helps athletes know themselves better, develop their sense of self-responsibility and teach them mental skills to overcome mental challenges which athletes encounter in training and competition.
Meichi graduated from Charles University in Czech Republic with a Master?s Degree in Physical Education and Sports. Her thesis focused upon stress management in elite Czech soccer players. She is currently redirecting her efforts from her postgraduate pursuits so as to be fully focused on the provision of sport psychology services for our national table tennis athletes.
