Self-Talk
Self-talk is the internal dialogue you have with yourself. It is an asset
when it enhances your self-worth and performance. However, it may
also have negative effects when it is demoralising and decreases
performance.
Four Different Types of Self-talk
  1. Motivational Self-talk - Psyching yourself up
  2. Instructional Self-talk - Telling yourself what you need to do
  3. Negative Self-talk - Thoughts that decrease performance
  4. Neutral Self-talk - Unlikely to evoke an emotion
Techniques to Help Control the Type of Self-talk
  1. Thought stopping - stopping a negative thought and replacing it with a positive one
  2. Reframing - Changing one's point of view of the situation
  3. Affirmation statements - Statements that reflect positive attitudes or thoughts about one's self
  4. Video feedback - Replaying positive moments to increase confidence
We Use Self-talk to:
  • Change bad habits
  • Learn new skills or perfect older ones
  • Focus and control attention
  • Control our emotions and mood
  • Build self-efficacy
