Elite Sport Development

The Singapore Sports Institute (SSI), Singapore Development Group (SDG) at the SSC firmly believes in the value of strategic, long-term development of both athletes and sports. We adopt a holistic approach to ensuring long-term, elite sport development.

To help elite athletes achieve their potential in the international sporting arena, SSI assists National Sports Associations (NSAs) in developing customised frameworks for success. As part of the multi-year planning process, we help NSAs identify and bridge gaps in their existing systems in pursuit of international success.

An athlete's long-term development plans are supported by comprehensive, individualised training and competition programmes. To help them achieve at the international stage, we provide a wide range of programmes and services to support our elite athletes throughout the various stages of their development.

Code of Athlete Management

The Code of Athlete Management (COAM) represents the fraternity's commitment to adopt an athlete-centric approach in providing support to our elite athletes. The COAM is designed to ensure the overall integrity of the athlete development programme and has two key components. The first requires mandatory compliance to effect fair and transparent policies on athlete selection and anti-doping issues. It insists on athlete agreements that clearly articulate the joint roles and responsibilities of the athletes and the NSAs. The second component details guidelines for NSAs to establish a conducive high performance environment for athletes and includes provisions for adequate training and competition opportunities for athletes, performance monitoring and the effective utilisation of sports medicine and sports science services.

Major Games' Preparation

The HPMD team seeks to enhance athletes' performance and recovery at the Major Games. Through our advance planning and real-time involvement, we minimise distraction and stress for athletes, allowing them to focus on performance goals. In the four Major Games (Southeast Asian, Commonwealth, Asian and Olympic Games), the Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC) and SSC collaborate on the following:

  • High-performance preparation plans
  • High-performance/Major Games' preparation workshops
  • Performance analysis
  • Major Games' Secretariat functions to coordinate on-site operations
  • Enhanced Sports Medicine & Sports Science support

Sports Medicine & Sports Science Support

The elite sporting environment requires all our athletes to be in peak physical condition and drug-free. The sports medicine and sports science services monitor general athlete health, prevent injury and enhance recovery & rehabilitation. It also identifies ways to optimise athlete performance through the latest sports science expertise and technology. HPMD provides access to these services throughout the year, offering additional support in the lead-up to Major Games i.e. setting up a Recovery Centre at the Games and following up with the NSAs in ensuring compliance with regulations and guidelines set by the World Anti-Doping Agency.
