Not surprisingly, statistics show that men are more active in sports than women are. About 42% of all women in Singapore participate in some kind of sports once a week versus 55% for men.
However, the High Participation Division at the SSC would like to call for a round of applause for Singapore's women. Contrary to first glance, the recent sports participation figure for women has actually showed significant improvement from the 32% in 2001. The High Participation Division knew that figure was too low to be healthy for the women of Singapore. We also knew that a lack of time didn't mean a lack of desire. The participation rate reflected the hard reality for most married women with children. Women remain the traditional caregiver in any given family. And there's no negotiating the fact that children come first.
SSC aims to close or narrow the gap between female sports participation and the national average through i) targeted lifestyle marketing ii) sports-friendly infrastructure and iii) collaborative partnerships.
This resulted in our "Sports. Make it a girl thing" campaign, encouraging women to get moving in ways that best suited their lives and their lifestyles last year. The broad range of activities not only appeal to the inner athlete in women, the association of sports and female bonding has also cast a different definition and a new proposition to sports.
Strong women are confident women, and strong girls grow up to become self-actualised, happy and healthy women. Who wouldn't want to give the gift of health and confidence to themselves and their daughters?
