Children & Youth
It can be all too easy for people to forget that children don't play sports the way adults do. However, at the SSC's Youth Sport Development (YSD) Division, our children and youth programmes are based on the recognition that children do play differently and that they need positive reinforcement rather than the technicalities of sports. Sports is fun!

Children mature into athletes at different rates, and Youth Sport Development wants to see them in functional and fun sports programmes at every developmental step of the way. Our early programmes reinforce the ABCs of athletics: agility, balance, coordination and speed. These skills will set them up well for the future if they decide to pursue elite competitive sports.

Under our Learn-To-Play programme, we provide opportunities to try sports through affordable classes at the SSC sports facilities. Our National Sports Associations also hold workshops, clinics and seminars to raise community awareness of a specific sport and to refine the skill level of athletes already in the sport. We recognise the growing interest among teenagers and young adults in Extreme & Adventure Sports such as BMX action, skateboarding, rock climbing.

We work directly with parents and educators, too, to promote the value of sports to Singapore's next generation. The Sportscovery! workshops for Parents and Children encourage parent-and-child interaction through hands-on activities to discover sport. This initiative is launched to promote family togetherness in sport and for the child, to play, discover and grow through movement and physical activities.

Through a new funding model -- the Sports Education Programme (SEP) ,we work with schools to endorse programmes that are age and skill appropriate for the target audience. The SEP aims to promote sports participation in schools and increase sporting opportunities for the young. SEP enhances schools' ability to conduct a wider range of quality sports programmes.

Our involvement goes well beyond the green-lighting of projects. We set standards for curriculum and ensure the competency of the coaches proposed for the classes. We network, share knowledge and forge partnerships so we can grow our next generation of sports competitors. Children are our country's best resource.
